The legend on the reverse is van Riebeeck’s motto in Old Dutch and loosely translates: “he who wants to get ahead in life, shall fear no unpleasantness”. The blank area probably means that this was medal intended as an award.
The Netherlands-South African Society was founded in 1881 with the aim of promoting cultural contact between the two countries.
