Obverse: Bust of van Riebeeck in wig facing partly to the right. Monogram: “MP” on the lower right. Legend above: “ DIE ADVANCEMENT SOECKT SAL GEEN NAERSTIGHEYT SPAREN”, and below: “= JAN VAN RIEBEECK =”.

Reverse: At the foot, the arms of the Netherlands (left) and the Union of South Africa (right). The legend around: “NED. ZUID AFRIKAANSE VERENIGING (Netherlands-South African Society)”.

Notes: The legend on the reverse is van Riebeeck’s motto in Old Dutch and loosely translates: “he who wants to get ahead in life, shall fear no unpleasantness”. The blank area probably means that this was medal intended as an award.

The Netherlands-South African Society was founded in 1881 with the aim of promoting cultural contact between the two countries.
