Obverse: Bust of van Riebeeck in wig, front. Monogram: “DS” within a circle above shoulder on left. Legend: “JAN VAN RIEBEECK STICHT SUID – AFRIKA (Jan van Riebeeck founder of South Africa)” and below between hyphens: “1652”.

Reverse: At the top, van Riebeeck coat of arms having three rings on the shield and a helmet crest with a ring in fist above. Below that, across: “JAN VAN RIEBEECK / GEBOREN TE CULENBORG [sic] – 1619 / OVERLEDEN TE BATAVIA – 1677 / (line) / STICHTER EN EERSTE / COMMANDEUR VAN / DE NEDERZETTING / AAN KAAP / DE GOEDE HOOP (Jan van Riebeeck, born Culemborg 1619, died Batavia 1677, founder and first commander of the settlement in the Cape of Good Hope”.

Notes: Van Riebeeck landed three ships, the Drommedaris, Reijger and Goede Hoop, to establish a settlement in the Cape for the Dutch East India Company in 1652.
