In the angle above, starboard broadside view of steamship at sea. In the middle across on a ribbon: "MAINE". In the angle below, the Red Cross shield. Legend on a lifebelt round the edge, above: "AMERICAN HOSPITAL SHIP FOR" and below: "SOUTH AFRICA".

The AHS Maine was an American ship lent to the British government by Bernard N. Baker, president of the Atlantic Transport, for use as a hospital ship during the Boer war.
It is believed that this badge was used my the medical staff on board.
