Obverse: Conjoined bareheaded busts of van Riebeeck & de la Queillerie, left. Signed: "PAGLIARI" below. Legend above: "JAN VAN RIEBEECK . MARIA DE LA QUILLERIE" and below: "1652".

Reverse: Coat of arms of the South African Historical Mint with antelope supporters, crest and motto: "HISTORIA DOCET". Across, divided by the coat of arms: "1979" or "1982". Legend above: "HISTORIESE MUNT S.A. HISTORICAL MINT" and below between stops: "FYNGOUD (1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 or 1/20) OZ FINE GOLD".

Notes: The example dated 1979 is single. The other five examples, all dated 1982, come inside a black, oblong, fitted case, lined on the inside with red velvet-like and white-silk-like material. On the inside of the lid: "(coat of arms) / SOUTH AFRICAN / HISTORICAL MINT".

Van Riebeeck landed three ships, the Drommedaris, Reijger and Goede Hoop, to establish a settlement in the Cape for the Dutch East India Company in 1652. He was married to Maria de la Quellerie.

The occasions dated 1979 and 1982 on these medal is not known.
