Notes: During 1893 Matabeleland was invaded by troops of the British South Africa Company. King Lobengula of the Matabele fled the capital, Bulawayo. On 4 November 1893, Leander Starr Jameson declared Matabeleland to be under the rule of the B.S.A. Company and Cecil John Rhodes ordered that Bulawayo should be rebuilt for white settlement.
