Orania is a small town (population about 1,500 in 2017) located along the Orange River in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape, approximately halfway between Cape Town and Pretoria. It was established to provide an enclave for the Afrikaner language and culture.

The young man depicted on the obverse of the medal symbolises Orania. The original artwork was donated by Mrs. Elly Holm of the Afrikaner Vryheidstigting (AVSTIG, in English: Afrikaner Freedom Foundation).

The Ora is the local currency of Orania. It is pegged at par with the South African rand. The originally issue had notes denominated in 10, 20, 50, 100 Ora. This has now has been extended with the introduction of the 200 Ora note. From 2004 to 2017 there have been six issues (A, B, C, D, E and F series) The value of the circulating currency is about 3.8 million Ora. This medal commemorates the first anniversary of the introduction of the Ora in 2004.

The 100 Ora note (depicted here) has the same image as the obverse of this medal.
