Edge: Engraved with the rank, name and unit of the recipient. This medal (1879 Clasp): “TR. PIGG. ALEXANDRA MD. RIFLES”.

Obverse: Diademed head of young Queen Victoria, left. Signed on truncation: "W. WYON R.A.". Legend: "VICTORIA (left) REGINA (right)".

Reverse: Lion crouching on platform, left, protea bush behind. In the exergue, crossed native spears and shield. Legend: "SOUTH AFRICA".

Notes: The medal was issued to British and Colonial troops engaged in various actions against several native tribes in the Cape Colony and Natal between 1877 and 1879, most notably the Zulu War conflict in Natal.
