This medal is a mule of the Austrian medal made during the Boer War (Laidlaw: 0988) and the Australian medal commemorating the 100 anniversary of the settlement at Portland Bay made by Stokes & Sons in 1934.
The dies appear to have been recut and it is not known when, where or why this medal was made.
Lieutenant James Grant was a career British naval officer who commanded the ship, Lady Nelson, on a survey voyage in 1800 of the Bass Strait (between Victoria and Tasmania) on which he discovered Portland bay.
