Obverse: Bare head of Wahlberg, left. Signed: “L.A.” on the truncation. Legend above: “JOH. AUG. WAHLBERG RER. NAT. VESTIG SVEC.” and below “NAT.1810.DEN.1856.”

Reverse: An African elephant, right, trunk raised, with palm trees behind. Legend: “NOMEN DEDIT ET MORTEM”. In the exergue: “PEREGRINATORI CELEBRI SOCIO / ANTE DEFUNCTO QUAM ELECTO / R. ACAD. SC. SVEC. / MDCCCLVIII.”

Notes: Johan August Wahlberg (1810-1856) was a Swedish naturalist and African Explorer. He is renowned for his collection of African bird species. The Wahlberg Eagle is named after him. He was killed by an elephant while on a collecting trip in Matabeleland.

Lea Fredrika Ahlborn (1826-1897) was a famous Swedish artist.
