Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Coat of arms of the Union of South Africa with motto: "EX UNITATE VIRES". Below right: "S.A.M.". On a raised band, legend on left: "UNIE VAN SUID-AFRIKA" and on the right between stops: "UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA".

Reverse: Within a laurel wreath tied at the bottom with a ribbon, dove in flight to the left with olive branch in beak. Below, staggered on two lines: “1939 / 1945”.

Gold medal stamped: "9CT" and silver medal stamped: “.925” at the foot.
