Obverse: Bust of Paul Kruger, left. Legend: “ZIUD AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK”.

Reverse: Across: “JULI 1895”. Legend above: “SPOORWEG FEESTEN” and below between stars: “PRETORIA”.

Notes: The obverse die was the same one used to strike the Z.A.Republic half-crown engraved by Otto Schultz.

There are two types of reverse.
Type 1: The central date lies between the ‘P’ and ‘E’ of ‘SPOOWEG FEESTEN’.
Type 2: The central date lies between the ‘S’ and ‘N’ of ‘SPOOWEG FEESTEN’.

It is recorded that 1000 medal in silver were produced. It is believed that they was issued to everybody who had been invited to the luncheon as part of the festivities surrounding the opening of the railway line. The medals served as an 'entrance ticket'.

A unique gold uniface medal of the same size may have been produced for the occasion (AM 7)

A larger unique 38.8 mm (crown sized) gold medal was presented to the Postmaster-General, Mr van Alphen. (Hern 22, AM 8).
