Edge: Plain. Stamped with the issue number. This medal is No. 245. Also sometimes engraved with the name of the recipient.

Obverse: Coat of arms of Pretoria with antelope supporters, castle crest and motto: “PRAESTANTIA PRAEVALEAT PRETORIA” on a ribbon below. Legend above: “PRETORIA” and below: “1895-1945”.

Reverse: The emblem of the Z.A. Republic Railways: partly oblique view of a winged wheel speeding to the left down a rail. Behind, twelve streaks of lightening emanating from a cloud. Above: “1895” from which rays shine down behind the design. The SA Mint sterling silver mark stamped below. Legend on a raised band: “NEDERLANDSCHE ZUID-AFRIKAANCHE SPOORWEG – MAATSCHAPPIJ (Dutch South African Railway Company)” with flower at the top.

Notes: Comes is a yellow cardboard box. On the outside of the lid in red within a square border: "AANGEBIED DEUR DIE / STAD PRETORIA / (line) / PRESENTED BY THE / CITY OF PRETORIA".

The reverse of the medal is the same as the reverse of the medal by J.P.M. Menger that commemorated the opening of the railway in 1895 (Laidlaw 0090 - the double flange variety) without the signature: “J.P.M.M.F.”
