The exhibition of raw materials, manufactured products and works of art from India and the Colonies was opened by Queen Victoria on 4th May 1886. It was held in South Kensington on a site adjacent to the Albert Hall.
From the local South African exhibition held the previous year in Port Elizabeth, the best displays were selected to be sent to London. According to the Illustrated London News, the Cape of Good Hope put on the finest shows in the annexe devoted to Africa. These included a model of a diamond mine, stuffed ostriches, paintings of the Colony, heads of game, raw materials and manufactured products.
L.C. Wyon was a member of the renowned family of designers and engravers. In 1851 he succeeded his father as Chief engraver at the Royal Mint, a post he held until his death in 1991.
