The Royal Mint in Pretoria, at the corner of Visagie and Bosman streets, was opened in 1923. The gates shown on the obverse were installed on this building. The Royal mint was taken over by the South African Government in 1941 and renamed the South African Mint. The premises became inadequate and the mint was relocated to Gateway, Centurion and officially opened by the State President, Mr. F.W. Klerk, on 29 October 1992.
