Within a raised oval band, the coat of arms of the University of Cape Town: an anchor against a horizontal lined background with a book: "SPIES BONA" in front. Above that a crown and a lamp against a hatched background. Above the shield, a view of Table Mountain. Shield supported by two lions at the bottom and, below a line, a radiant sun. On ribbons in front of the oval band: "1829..S.A.C. (left).U.C.T..1918". Legend on the oval band above: ".. UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN .." and below: ".. UNIVERSITEIT VAN KAAPSTAD ..". Three stops above and below the oval band.

The University of Cape Town was established in 1918. It had its origins in the South African College, founded in 1829 as a high school for boys. The College developed into a fully fledged university during the period 1880 to 1900. In 1918 the College separated into the South African College Schools and the University of Cape Town.
The 1829 coat of arms was retained with modifications and is still used today.
