Obverse: Winged railway wheel surmounted by a crown. On a ribbon below: “S.A.R.E.”’ Legend: “REGIMENTAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION”. Signed round the rim at the foot: “ HEYDENRYCH JBURG”

Reverse: Within a laurel wreath tied at the bottom, engraved with ornaments across: “1911-12 / G.MS. SHIELD / WON BY / NO. 5 COY. / LT. T.P. ATKINS / CAPT. OF TEAM”

Notes: The crowned winged railway wheel was the emblem of the Central South African Railway Volunteers. The Central South African Railways (CSAR) was from the end of the Boer War in 1902 until Union in 1910 the operator of public railways in the Transvaal Colony and Orange River Colony. After Union the Central South African Railway Volunteers was renamed the South African Railway Engineers Regiment and continued until 1913 when it was absorbed into the Pretoria Regiment.
