Obverse: Large stream locomotive on railway track, left and partly to the front. In an arc above: “S.A.S.” and below: “S.A.R.”

Reverse: The arms of the Union of South Africa. On a U-shaped ribbon around and below, across the horizontal ends: “1860 (left) 1960 (right)”, on the curved part: “EEUFEES VAN DIE SA SPOORWEE . S.A. RAILWAYS CENTENARY”. In an arc above: “UMDLALO . SPORT . PAPALI”. Stamped at the foot with the SA Mint sterling silver mark.

Notes: 26 June 1860 the Natal Railway Company opened a line for steam locomotives linking Durban with Harbour Point, a distance of about 2 miles.
