Alice is a town in the Eastern Cape. The main campus of the University of Fort Hare is in Alice. The University was founded in 1916 and during apartheid time was the primary institution of higher learning for back South Africans and blacks from other British Commonwealth countries. Amongst these were Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Desmond Tutu, Kenneth Kaunda, Julius Nyerere, Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo.
