Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Within a narrow vertical oval frame with pointed ends, a British soldier holding rifle, standing front. Laurel wreath below enamelled crossed flags behind: British Union (left), Royal standard (right). At the top, a crown with enamel highlights. Legend above, against a blue enamelled background, between flags: “1899 1900”.
(1) Legend below on a blue enamelled scroll: “SOUTH AFRICA FOR QUEEN & EMPIRE”.
(2) No Scroll.

Reverse: (1) Six small medallions with Queen Victoria, left, in the middle surrounded by five named generals. Clockwise from the top: “ROBERTS”, “KITCHENER” “POWELL”, WHITE”, “BULLER”. Crown at the top.
(2) Blank. This medal engraved: "HJH"

Notes: The larger medal Comes in a maroon leather oval-shaped case formed to hold the pendant with a velvet pad and hook on the inside.

It is reported that the smaller fob medal (missing the attachment loop) belonged to Henry James Holloway who served with the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders in India and in South Africa during the Boer War with rank of Drummer. He was with the British Expeditionary Force at the start of WWI and received the Military Medal for gallantry. He was discharged in 1919 with the rank of Acting Regimental Sergeant Major.
