Pietermaritzburg is the capital and second largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The city was founded in 1838 by the Voortrekkers, following the defeat of Dingane at the Battle of Blood River and named in honour two of their leaders, Piet Retief and Gert Maritz. Britain took over Pietermaritzburg in 1843 and it became the administrative seat for the Colony of Natal.
