Edge: Plain. The silver medal is stamped: “ZILVER HOLLAND” and the bronze medal: “HOLLAND”.

Obverse: Bareheaded bust of the bearded President Steijn, front. Legend “M.T. STEIJN STAATPRES. VAN DEN ORANJE-VRIJSTAAT”.

Reverse: An injured lion with the tail of an arrow protruding from his breast resting on a rocky promontory, hills and clouds behind. Incused on the rock beneath: “VERWOND MAAR NIET / VERWONNEN (wounded but not defeated)”. On the silver medal, signed: “B.U” on the rocks near the right rim.

Notes: At the suggestion of Marie de Mann, the medal was commissioned by the Dutch Numismatic Society, and produced by Begeer of Holland in honour of President Steijn. The design was taken from a model by A. Achtenhagen. The medal was released for sale on 29th November 1902.
