On the left, in an oval frame, bareheaded bust of the Duchess, front. On the right, in a oval frame, bust of the Duke in naval uniform with cap, front. Between the frames, sea with radiant sun on the horizon, rays extending upwards. Clasped hands below. On a scroll at the top, across: "DUKE & DUCHESS (in an arc) / OF / CORNWALL / & YORK". Legend at the bottom: "CAPE COLONY'S WELCOME".

Within a laurel wreath tied at the bottom, arms of the Cape Colony with antelope supporters, Hope crest and motto: “.SPIES.BONA.”. Below on a raised cartouche, almost obscuring the wreath, across: “TO COMMEMORATE / THE VISIT OF THE / DUKE & DUCHESS OF CORNWALL / & YORK TO / CAPE COLONY / 1901”. Maker’s name close to the rim: “MEYERS BROS (left) CAPE TOWN (bottom) AND (right, the remainder indistinct”.
