On a ribbon in an arc at the top: "PRESENTED TO". Engraved on the small central shield across: "G. Ambery / 2nd. V.B. Welsh / REGT. / PONTYCLUN DET / ON HIS RETURN FROM / S. AFRICA /1901". Engraved ornaments on the main shield. Maker's mark: "WH.H" stamped on the left and the Birmingham hallmarks for 1900-01 (a) on the right.

7370 Private G. Ambury(Sp?) is on the QSA medal roll serving with the 1st Volunteer Service Company Welsh. He was awarded four clasps: Diamond Hill, Belfast, Cape Colony and Orange free State. The 1st Volunteer Service Company was formed on 9 March 1900 and arrived in South Africa on 10 October 1900. The Company left the 1st Battalion for home at Codwan on 8 April 1901. Strength: 4 Officers, 1 Colour Sergeant, 7 Sergeants, 9 Corporals, 3 Lance Corporals, 2 Drummers, 111 Privates (3 died of disease). Subsequently, Ambury probably volunteered (along with 30 other soldiers from the 1st Company) to join the 2nd Volunteer Service Company which returned home later on 26 May 1902.
Pontyclun is a village in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales.
