Shield engraved with the emblem of Greenock at the time: port broadside view of a three-masted ship in full sail and, in the foreground, a quay with a dockworker pushing barrels supervised by a foreman. In an arc above: “GOD SPEED GREENOCK”. At the bottom, the maker's mark: "WGM" on the left and the Birmingham 9ct gold hallmark for 1898-99 (y) on the right.

Shield engraved across with ornaments: “South African / WAR / 1900”. Band ornamentally engraved.
