Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Helmeted Canadian soldier standing front, holding rifle at ease in left hand with right arm raised clutching a bunch of maple. On the left, within a wreath tied with a long ribbon at the bottom: "SOUTH / AFRICA / 1900". Above, on the right, across: "CANADA / SHARES / IN THE / GLORY". The raised rim is readed on the bronze medal and plain on the white metal medal.

Reverse: Beaded border round the rim. With crown crest, unofficial coat of arms of Canada used at that time representing seven provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. Two wreaths above, tied with long ribbons hanging down. Left wreath around plaque: "SUNNYSIDE" and right wreath around plaque: "PAARDEBURG". Signed: "P.W. ELLIS & CO (left) TORONTO (right)". Legend on a raised roughened band: "HALIFAX HERALD PATRIOTIC FUND". The raised rim is readed on the bronze medal and plain on the white metal medal.

The Halifax Herald was the leading newspaper in Nova Scotia. It is now called the Chronicle Herald. The fund was used to aid returning soldiers.
