Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Bareheaded bust of Verwoerd in jacket and tie, right. Leafy branches at the top and half-way down the sides. Below: “DR. H.F. VERWOERD / 1901 -1966”. Protea flower at the foot.

Reverse: Flanked by vertical columns of laurel: “EERSTE MINISTER / VAN / SUID-AFRICA / 1958 . 1966 / PRIME MINISTER / OF / SOUTH AFRICA”. On a tablet at the top between quotes: “SKEP U EIE / TOEKOMS” and on a tablet at the bottom between quotes: “CREATE YOUR OWN / FUTURE”. At the foot, gold medal stamped: “9CT” and silver medal stamped: “SILVER”

Notes: Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd (1901 - 1966) was a member of the National Party of South Africa and Prime Minister from 1958 until his assassination in 1966. Under his premiership South Africa broke away from Great Britain and became a republic in 1961. He is remembered as the man behind the conception and implementation of apartheid.
