Notes: To mark the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the City of Johannesburg, the Council resolved to pay tribute to those pioneers who had lived in Johannesburg, or were born there, prior to 1st January 1900. 500 of these medals were made for presentation.

It is possible that Professor Bain had a number of gold medal struck privately.

Comes inside a green cardboard case from the SA Mint with: "Johannesburg" in gold letters on the outside of the lid. On the inside of this medal’s lid is hand-written: “PRESENTED TO HARRIET COOK GARDEN PARTY AT TURFFONTEIN RACE COURSE”.

Those who were unable to attend the function received their medal in the post with a covering letter from the Mayor, Boyce Eagar.
