Obverse: Two soldiers standing on flat ground; the one on the left in slouch hat; the one on the right in helmet with bayoneted rifle. Between them, a Maxim gun on a tripod. Legend above: “COMMEMORATION MEDAL 1901”. In the exergue: “15TH. I.Y. ● 3RD. V.B.D.L.I.”

Reverse: Coat of arms of Sunderland, sextant with globe crest and motto: “NIL DESPERANDUM AUSPICE DEO”. Legend: “SUNDERLAND VOLUNTEER SERVICE IN THE BOER WAR”. Star at foot.

Notes: The city of Sunderland is in Northumberland, North East England.

The 3rd (Sunderland) Volunteer Battalion, Durham Light Infantry contributed to the several volunteer service companies that went to serve with the regular troop in South Africa. The 15th Imperial Yeomanry was a company from Northumberland and formed part of the 5th Battalion.
