Notes: Sir Henry George Wakelyn "Harry" Smith (1787-1860) was a noted English soldier during the Napoleonic Wars and governor of the Cape Colony between 1847 and 1852. During his term in office he expanded the borders of the colony by annexing territories to the north and east, notably the Orange Free State and British Kaffraria. The Town of Harrysmith in the Free States in named after him and the town of Ladysmith in Natal is named after his Spanish born wife.
